The Romantic Zone is located at the tip of one of Stockholm’s ‘green wedges’, Tyrestakilen, where the Nacka Nature Reserve meets the city. Here, urban ideas of rural culture, nature and heritage are enacted in behaviours that highlight one of the main contradictions of this time and place; a consumption of resources that are extracted elsewhere, out of sight, while local nature remains pristine and perfect. A building supply store neighbouring a protected forest keeps the dream alive, as do Hammarbybacken’s artificial Alps. Perhaps the most efficient rural experience can be had here, hiking through the forest or running up the hill after work, to replenish your physical and mental strength to work.

My degree project aims to design and inaugurate an annual trail race as a way to collect aspects of a landscape that are rarely read together. In architectural terms, a race is a spatial sequence of movement and rest in relation to materiality, rhythm, views and so on.

Här uppträder urbana föreställningar om natur, landsbygdskultur och kulturarv i beteenden som bär på en av vår tids mest centrala motsägelser: konsumtion av resurser som utvinns utom synhåll, medan miljön allra närmast förblir orörd och perfekt. I denna fiktion ingår ett byggvaruhus som är granne med ett naturreservat, liksom Hammarbybackens konstgjorda alptopp. Här kan du få den maximalt effektiva lantliga upplevelsen, när du springer uppför backen eller promenerar i skogen efter jobbet, återskapande din mentala och fysiska arbetskapacitet.

Projektets mål är att formge och inviga ett årligt lopp som samlar ihop ett landskap vars olika delar sällan läses tillsammans. Som arkitektur är ett lopp en rumslig sekvens av rörelse och vila i förhållande till egenskaper som materialitet, rytm och utblickar.
