Master/Individual Study Plan in Design

I have been inspired by theories saying that in the future, we must find alternatives to global mass production and instead focus on manufacturing everyday objects locally from the natural resources we have at hand.

In my degree project, I explore our relationship to local resources and their origins. What practices may become more important in the future if we move away from global mass production and more towards local self-sufficiency? I have focused on the material wood and its origin. By working with a small-scale sawmill near Stockholm, I try to gain practical knowledge of how the process from tree to the material wood looks. Practices, such as the sawmill I work with, are important because they are involved in the transition from living nature to the material used for human purposes.

Jag har inspirerats av teorier som menar att vi i framtiden måste hitta alternativ till global massproduktion och istället fokusera på att tillverka vardagsföremål lokalt av de naturresurser vi har nära till hands.

I mitt examensprojekt utforskar jag relationen till lokala resursers ursprung och vilka praktiker som kan bli viktigare i framtiden om vi rör oss bort från global massproduktion och mer mot lokal självförsörjning. Jag har fokuserat på materialet trä och dess ursprung. Genom att arbeta med ett småskaligt sågverk nära Stockholm försöker jag få praktisk kunskap om hur processen från träd till materialet trä kan se ut. Praktiker såsom sågverket jag arbetar med är viktiga eftersom de befinner sig i övergången mellan levande natur och material för mänskliga ändamål.
