Mass Design – No thanks! Additive methods, 3D textiles, and alternation for individualism!

This project is carried out in the Bachelor’s program in Industrial Design DIV/Konstfack, during the spring of 2020. This project combines two of my strongest skills: applied knowledge in industrial design and textile and pattern design.

The collaboration is done together with the Icelandic company Össur, which develops and produces aids and solutions in orthopaedics.

The purpose of the project is to provide design proposals that are individually adapted to Rheo knee xc, which is one of the company’s existing knee joint prostheses. I have developed a frame for the knee prosthesis, which holds the fabric, with 3D applications in place, and gives the prosthesis a flexible silhouette.

It is important to define the core of a design project: to explore, develop, evaluate, execute, summarize and reflect. This has led me to a design process consisting of both textile crafts, co-design and production of prototypes. Not least, I have done a close-up study of a product category and how it can be developed in the future.

Investigating textile materials and their properties is central to developing a method that allows 3D-printing on textiles. The purpose is to provide a textile with a three-dimensional character.

My design proposal Frame xc can be cast in light metal, where an elastic band is inserted and fastened with the aid of a button. The objects are possible to disassemble, in order to easily be included in a circular system, in which composition methods facilitate recycling. The pattern construction clarifies how the fabric is cut on the frame and closed with velcro straps.

The textile can be selected in any color, 3D applications can also be selected to create a great opportunity for variation. Customizing Össer’s existing product, by adding textiles, allows the user to choose. The goal is for the knee joint to be able to express individual preferences. A prosthesis no longer represents a need to replace something lost. It can be a symbol that the wearer has the power to create whatever they want to create in that space. So, with design, I want to contribute to new opportunities. Therefore, I have given the project the title “Prosthesis as an Enabler.”

Projektet genomförs på kandidatprogrammet i Industridesign DIV/Konstfack, under VT2020. I projektet kombinerar jag två av mina kompetenser: Tillämpade kunskaper inom industridesign och textil- och mönsterkonstruktion.

Samarbetet sker med det isländska företaget Össur, som utvecklar och producerar hjälpmedel och lösningar inom ortopedi.

Syftet är att ge designförslag som är individanpassat till Rheo Knee xc, som är en av företagets befintliga knäledsproteser. Jag har utvecklat en ram för knäprotesen, som håller textilen med 3D-applikationer på plats och ger protesen en följsam siluett.

Det är viktigt att definiera kärnan i ett designprojekt, att utforska, utveckla, utvärdera, utföra, sammanfatta och reflektera. Detta har lett mig till en designprocess med såväl textilhantverk, co-design och framställande av prototyper. Inte minst har jag gjort en närstudie av en produktkategori och hur den kan utvecklas i framtiden.

Mitt designförslag Frame xc kan gjutas i lättmetall där ett resårband träs in och fästs samman med hjälp av en knäppning. Föremålen är möjliga att ta isär, för att lättare kunna ingå i ett cirkulärt system, i vilket sammansättningsmetoder underlättar återvinning. Mönsterkonstruktionen förtydligar hur textilen träs på ramen och sluts med kardborrebanden.

Textilien kan väljas i valfri kulör, 3D-applikationer kan likaså väljas och då uppstår en stor möjlighet till variation. Att individanpassa Össers befintliga produkt, genom att tillföra textil, ger användaren möjlighet att välja. Målet är att knäledsprotesen ska kunna uttrycka individuella preferenser. En protes representerar inte längre ett behov att ersätta något man förlorat. Det kan vara en symbol för att bäraren har kraften att skapa vad den helst vill skapa i det utrymmet. Jag vill med design medverka till möjligheter. Därav titeln Protesen som möjlighetsgörare.
