An Investigation into Sleep Deprivation

can’t sleep
can’t think
must create

As a mother of three small kids, having to produce a final exhibition, I wondered why my brain didn’t work anymore. I started to research what sleep deprivation does to the brain and how creativity possibly is linked to sleep. How can I hack the brain to boost creativity? Or hack the brain to induce sleep? I got into brain waves, binaural beats and isochronic tones. I was sucked up into a sinkhole of advanced neuroscience, commercial interests and self-help.
Using material that actually has nothing to do with brain science and with material seemingly intended to be stimulating or relaxing, I animate and create video and sound that resembles my newfound field of study. The research on how to hack the brain to stimulate creativity and aid sleep evolved to be the project itself. I investigate sleep deprivation ‘through’ sleep deprivation.
