I am investigating how I can use rules for structural relationships to create incomplete structures that are activated by participation. My role as a designer is to design a rule for the structure’s relationship – a relationship that also becomes an instruction for activation. With this method, I examine the capacity and application of form and space. It also becomes a way of questioning my role as a designer and positioning myself further away from final form and function. A way to circumvent a standardised point of departure and take my launch from reciprocity. A way to give space to an application according to situation, context and user.

‘Competence’ and ‘performance’ are terms used in linguistics to describe a person’s linguistic skills in a language (competence) and how those skills are used in communication (performance). The terms are also used in structuralist architectural theory to describe the application possibilities that exist in a design and how a context creates this application. The relationship between these are, in essence, relative.

Jag undersöker hur jag med regler för strukturella samband kan skapa ofullständiga strukturer som aktiveras av deltagande. Min roll som formgivare blir att utforma en regel för strukturens samband, ett samband som också blir en instruktion till aktivering. Med den här metoden undersöker jag kapaciteten och tillämpningen av form och rum. Det blir också ett sätt att ifrågasätta min roll som formgivare och placera mig själv längre bort från en slutlig form och funktion. Ett sätt att frångå en standardiserad utgångspunkt och utgå från en ömsesidighet. Det blir ett sätt att ge plats åt en tillämpning beroende av situation, kontext och användare.

“Competence” och “performance” är termer som används inom lingvistik för att beskriva den språkkunskap en person har i ett språk (competence) och hur den kunskapen används i kommunikation (performance). Begreppen används också inom den strukturalistiska arkitekturteorin för att beskriva de möjligheter till tillämpning som finns i en gestaltning och hur en kontext skapar den tillämpningen – deras samband är i grunden relativt.
