Refugees Welcome? is an illustrative project that explores structural apathy towards refugees in Sweden. It examines the relationship between governmental institutions, socio-political discourse, media and refugees. With the aim of studying the complex relationship between refugees and the Swedish society, it is a documentation and narration of Sweden’s contemporary history and the nation’s way of dealing with the so called ‘global refugee crisis’.

Refugees Welcome? is an act of resistance against the Migration Board’s deprivation of refugees’ rights to document whatever happens inside the walls of its office. The lack of a right to narration ends up with the documentation of refugees’ history from only one side. Therefore, my degree project stands up against the Migration Board’s attempts to alienate and silence refugees from telling their own stories in Sweden.

Refugees Welcome? är ett projekt som åskådliggör och undersöker strukturell apati mot flyktingar i Sverige. Det undersöker förhållandet mellan statliga institutioner, samhällspolitisk diskurs, media och flyktingar. Med syftet att undersöka den komplexa relationen mellan flyktingarna och det svenska samhället, är det en dokumentation och skildring av Sveriges nutidshistoria och landets sätt att hantera den så kallade ”den globala flyktingkrisen” på.

Refugees Welcome? är en motståndshandling mot Migrationsverkets berövande av flyktingarnas rättighet att dokumentera vad som sker innanför väggarna på deras kontor. Avsaknaden av rätten till en berättelse leder till en dokumentation av flyktingarnas historia från enbart den ena sidan. Därför motsätter sig mitt examensarbete Migrationsverkets försök att alienera och tysta flyktingarna från att berätta sina egna historier i Sverige.
