What Makes an Orc

In the fantasy genre, there are often non-human peoples such as elves, dwarves and orcs. They exist in a wide range of books, movies and games – all of which are made by different authors and creators. Despite this, and despite the fact that they don’t exist in real life, we have a clear idea of what these fantasy people look like and how they act.
In my degree project, I explore the different ways orcs are depicted in games, movies and books. The idea is to find a common denominator in the recurring qualities and analyse what these qualities mean.
This will be presented in the form of an animated film – in which the analysed depictions will be presented alongside my own drawings and depictions. The goal is not necessarily to present a conclusion – but rather to point out different phenomena and discuss what different depictions might mean.
