Answers to Questions Yet Unasked

“What’s the point of all these artistic expressions and orientations?” I believe that this question, which I am often asked by politicians, debaters and others, is the wrong question. It’s like asking what the benefit of birdsong is, or the purpose of life itself. These are questions that can certainly be asked, but in that case, with the aim of inspiring reflection. So, let’s try again: “What is the point of art’s pointlessness?”
Art, crafts, design… the image, the handicraft and the pedagogy – all of these practices have the ability to constantly shift, just like the Earth’s continental plates. Where there is art, there are collisions and unions, sometimes cracks that emit gas, smoke and heat, frustration and warmth. New materials take shape, the world is transformed.

Art and culture unite, displace and give birth to new – slowly, powerfully, but inexorably. History shows this time and time again – that images and design move to where they absolutely must be. Such as when photography made its entrance in the 19th century, and painting, released from the constraints of reproduction, became both abstract and surrealistic. Or more recently, as investigative and narrative journalism are given increasingly less space in public discourse. This has sparked an immediate interest among artists to inspect our society, to identify and to frame histories. When advertising beats us over the head with stencils and templates, illustrators reach into themselves and open up new, alternative worlds through drawing and film. In times of resource shortages and crises, the designer shows spirituality in both light and darkness – sees nature itself and infinity as clients. The artisan and the craftsperson turn to recycling and cast-offs; discarded materials become a resource and a source of knowledge and joy.

All of this is the power of art. Artistic expressions are answers to the questions yet unasked, or to those which have been asked and are now being reinterpreted. What we are doing together in this year’s Degree Exhibition is shifting that which was previously taken for granted. We are communicating, shaping and sharing the new – the new which simultaneously originates from that which we may have thought was forgotten. When old continents descend, new ones arise.

Svar på frågor som ännu inte ställts

”Vad är nyttan med alla dessa konstnärliga uttryck och inriktningar?” Jag menar att frågan, som jag ofta får av politiker, debattörer och andra, är felaktigt ställd. Den kan ju snarast jämföras med att ifrågasätta fågelsången, eller undra vad livet självt tjänar till. Visst kan man roa sig med att försöka besvara den, men då som anledning till reflektion. Så låt oss pröva igen: ”Vad är nyttan med konstens onytta?”
Konsten, hantverket, designen… bilden, slöjden och pedagogiken – alla dessa praktiker har en ständig förmåga att förflytta sig, precis som jordens kontinentalplattor. Där konsten finns uppstår krockar och föreningar, ibland sprickor där det strömmar ut gas, rök och hetta, frustration och värme. Nya material tar form, världen omskapas.

Konsten och kulturen förenar, förskjuter och föder – långsamt, kraftfullt men obönhörligt. Historien visar detta gång på gång – att bilder och formgivning går dit där de bara måste vara. Som på 1800-talet när fotografiet gjorde entré och måleriet frigjordes från avbildandets tvång, blev både abstrakt och surrealistiskt. Eller nyligen, när den undersökande och berättande journalistiken fick allt mindre plats i det offentliga samtalet. Då intresserar sig genast konstnärerna för att granska samhället och gestalta historier. När reklamen dunkar schabloner i våra huvuden går illustratören till sig själv och öppnar nya alternativa världar genom teckning och film. I tider av resursbrist och kris visar designern på andlighet i både ljus och mörker – ser rent av naturen och oändligheten som sin uppdragsgivare. Konsthantverkaren och slöjdare vänder sig till återbruket och det avlagda, bortkastade material blir en resurs och källa till kunskap och glädje.

Allt detta är konstens kraft. Konstnärliga uttryck är svar på de frågor som ännu inte ställts, eller som ställts och nu omtolkas. Det vi i Vårutställningen gör tillsammans är att förskjuta det som nyss togs för givet, vi berättar, formar och delar det nya – det som samtidigt härrör från det vi kanske trodde var glömt. När gamla kontinenter sjunker uppstår nya.
