Graphic Designers’ Words

In the working process with the visual identity for Konstfack’s Degree Exhibition 2020, we started from thoughts surrounding the school as a place, and education as a period of time and reasoning. We want to reflect how the physical space and the time given to every student affects what is being made. We began with a discussion around Konstfack as a sound box and students’ works as sound waves and then continued further into what happens when one is in a learning environment.

By looking at our own school years, from first grade to our graduate studies, we found elements from text editing programs, colours and shape studies, as well as thoughts around trying things out, working within given frames, conversations with others, finding your own way within the given frames, making a space of your own and repetition. In the word repetition we mean both to do things over and over again, and to also take something existing and make it your own. Such as the font Times New Roman, that we use in dark brown and that we have picked up from writing lessons in school where the font is standard for essays. For us, the font carries rules, authority and discipline, but also a nostalgic security and safety, a recognition and openness that gives us the authority to shape it in any way we want.

The illustrations are repetitive associations around space: to take and give space, to take and give time, group dynamics, feedback, resonance, colour, form and shape, restrictions and action and response. In the composition and colour choices, we have taken inspiration from educational material where the aim is to encourage learning. Something that has followed us in our process has been to let loose frames meet strictness – to balance that within given formats that have become even more important now that students’ works are being presented digitally instead of installed at school. When working with konstfack2020.se we wanted to make rooms for the students’ works, texts and collaborative processes; it has also been important to us to find different ways for the visitor to navigate on the site.
